Linux Live CDs

CD Rom

Linux has the ability to run form a CD, DVD or USB device. This is useful for troubleshooting a system that won’t boot because the other OS has problems. Live CDs are also used by security professionals. One good thing is the operating systems can’t be altered so malware won’t infect the CD.

When you download the installation file for Ubuntu you can get an ISO file (CD Image file). It acts like a virtual CD/DVD. You just need something to mount it as a drive. You can also burn the ISO file to an actual disc. Once it boots it will let you install Ubuntu or run Ubuntu from the CD/DVD like a live CD.

What are some uses for Live CD distro for Linux? Have you used one before? CD/DVD verse USB, what are the benefits and down side of each?
